Aja's Favorites

Aja Brianna Monet Sims was born on October 4, 1995 in Newark, New Jersey to Dr. Clinton Sims and Daisy Sims. She has an older sister, Leslie and two dogs, Stella and Champ. Currently, Aja is a sophomore at Boone High School. She will graduate from high school in the spring of 2014. During Aja's spare time, she loves to watch movies, go swimming and to ride roller coasters.

Aja and her parents moved from New Jersey to Florida when Aja was two years old. They wanted Aja to burn off the extra energy and make new friends so they decided to enroll Aja into gymnastics. At the beginning of Aja's gymnastics career, she trained at Orlando Metro Gymnastics.

In 2003, Aja competed as a level 4 gymnast. She won the all-around at the Temple Terrace Gymnastics Qualifier. At the Daytona Beach Open, she finished second in the all-around. She finished third in the all-around at the 3rd AAU Qualifier. Aja won the Florida AAU State Championships. At the Aloha Invite, she won uneven bars, balance beam, floor exercise and the all-around. She soon moved up to level 5. She won the all-around title at the 1st AAU Qualifier. She finished fourth in the all-around at the Gasparilla Classic. She won a bronze medal on floor exercise at the Jungle Gym. At the USAG State meet, she won the uneven bars title and placed third in the all-around. Aja competed one last level 5 meet in January of 2004, winning balance beam at the Sand Dollar Invitational.

In the fall of 2004, Aja moved up to level 6. She finished second on vault, uneven bars and balance beam at the Jungle Gym Invitational. In 2005, she finished third in the all-around at the Sand Dollar Invitational. Aja placed second in the all-around and first on balance beam at the Battle of Champions. At the Gasparilla Classic, she placed second in the all-aroud as well as first on vault and floor exercise.

Aja began competing as a level 7 gymnast in 2006. She won balance beam and the all-around at the IGI Chicago Style. At the Pikes Peak Cup, she placed third in the all-around. She concluded her 2006 season at the Level 7 State Championships. Aja moved up to level 8 in 2007. She won vault and placed third on balance beam at the IGI Chicago Style. She finished third on uneven bars at the Level 8 Regionals.

In 2008, Aja moved up to level 9. She won the all-around title at the Hard Rock Invitational. At the City of Lights Invitational, she finished fourth on vault and balance beam. She placed second in the all-around at the IGI Chicago Style. At the Level 9 State Championships, Aja won the balance beam title. She finished third on uneven bars, balance beam and the all-around at the Level 9 Regionals. There, she qualified to the Level 9 Eastern Nationals finishing fourth in the all-around!

She moved up to level 10 in 2009. At the Atlanta Crown Invitational, she won her only event, uneven bars. She placed second on uneven bars and third on balance beam at the Sand Dollar Invitational and City of Lights Invitational. At the Tampa Bay Turners Invitational, she won uneven bars and placed second on balance beam. Aja finished third in the all-around at the Palm Beach Invitational. At the Level 10 Florida State, she placed first on uneven bars, balance beam and in the all-around. She finished second on uneven bars at the Level 10 Regionals. That same year, Aja qualified to junior pre-elite and competed at the US Challenge.

In 2010, Aja won uneven bars and balance beam at the Tampa Bay Turners Invitational. She tested elite at the July National Qualifier. She started her 2011 season at the Tampa Bay Turners Invitational. At the Presidential Classic, she placed third in the all-around and first on floor exercise. She won all-around title at the Northern Lights Classic and Daytona Beach Open. At the Level 10 State Championships, she won the all-around title! In addition, she won silver medals on vault and floor exercise. She placed second on uneven bars and seventh overall at the Level 10 Regionals. There, Aja qualified to the Junior Olympic Nationals in Long Beach, California where she placed impressive fourth on uneven bars and in the all-around out of 57 gymnasts! During the JO Nationals, Aja's new bars skill was approved as an E skill and it is named The Sims. A few weeks after JO Nationals, Aja qualified to senior international elite and competed at the US Covergirl Classic in Chicago.

In 2012, Aja started her season at the Tampa Bay Turners Invitational, finishing first on vault, balance beam, floor exercise and in the all-around. At the Kurt Thomas Invitational in Dallas, Texas, she earned gold medals on vault, uneven bars, floor exercise and in the all-around. She placed second in the all-around and first on floor exercise at the Presidential Classic. At the Tim Rand Invitational, Aja finished first o nvault, uneven bars, balance beam and in the all-around. She then traveled to Georgia for the National Gymnastics Challenge, finishing third in the all-around and first on vault. At the Level 10 State Championships, she placed third in the all-around as well as first on vault and uneven bars. She did really well at the Level 10 Regionals where she swept the gold medals! At the Junior Olympic Nationals in Hampton, VA, Aja placed first on uneven bars, balance beam and in the all-around. She made the JO National Team.

Aja trains about 28 hours per week at Brandy Johnson's Global Gymnastics under coaches Kelly Pitzen, Brian Amato and Brandy Johnson-Scharpf. Currently, Aja is preparing for the upcoming 2013 season as a level 10 gymnast.
