Alexis Ortega was born on May 24, 2001 in Tampa, FL to Eddie and Lisa Ortega. She has two brothers, Nick and Mat and two guinea pigs named Fiona and Shailene. Alexis is an honor student at Academy of the Holy Names and she will graduate from high school in 2019. During Alexis's spare time, she enjoys watching Netflix and spending time with her friends.
Alexis's mom enrolled her into gymnastics for fun when she was three years old. She fell in love with the sport and quickly moved up to pre-team. She has been training at LaFleur's Gymnastics of Tampa her whole gymnastics career. She was uneven bars and balance beam champion at the 2009 Level 5 State Championships. At the 2011 PO State Championships, she earned gold medals on vault, uneven bars and in the all-around. As a level 7 gymnast in 2012, Alexis finished third in the all-around with a 37.250, first on uneven bars and floor exercise and second on vault at the State Championships. She tested out of level 8 and quickly moved up to level 9 for the 2013 season.
At the 2013 Level 9 State Championships, she placed fifth in the all-around and first on uneven bars. She qualified to the Region 8 Championships where she placed in the top ten in the all-around and first on uneven bars. Alexis continued competing level 9 in 2014 where she placed first on floor exercise and in the all-around at the State Championships. At the Region 8 Championships, she placed first in the all-around, first on uneven bars and second on uneven bars and floor exercise. Alexis qualified to the Level 9 Eastern Nationals, finishing second in the all-around with a 37.550, first on floor exercise and fifth on vault, uneven bars and balance beam. Alexis missed 2015 season due to an injury.
As a first-year level 10 gymnast in 2016, Alexis finished fourth on floor exercise at the State Championships. At the Region 8 Championships, she placed tenth in the all-around and ninth on balance beam and floor exercise. She was an alternate for the Junior Olympic Nationals. In 2017, Alexis finished first in the all-around with a 37.775, first on uneven bars and second on vault at the State Championships. At the Region 8 Championships, she placed second on balance beam and fourth on vault.
Currently, Alexis is preparing for the 2018 season as a level 10 gymnast. She trains 25 hours per week at LaFleur's Gymnastics of Tampa in Florida under coaches Jeff LaFleur, Billy West, Alecia Pollina and Natasha Jufko. Alexis would like to obtain a Division I college gymnastics scholarship.
