Anna Furong Glenn was born on April 27, 1998 in Nanchang, Jiangxi Province, China. Neil and Cindi Glenn adopted Anna and her twin sister, Grace on July 6, 1999. Currently, Anna resides in Charlotte, North Carolina with her family.
Anna and her twin sister Grace were introduced to gymnastics soon after their second birthday. Their friend, Melissa, was taking a class at Southeastern Gymnastics. She invited Anna and Grace to the May 2000 Southeastern “Olympiad” to show off her new gymnastics skills. As soon as the exhibition was over, the girls were trying to climb ropes, jumping off mats and hanging from bars. It was love at first sight – they were hooked.
Within weeks, Anna and Grace were traveling to Southeastern every Saturday morning for the “Mommy/Daddy and Me” class with head coach Ludmilla Shobe. Ludmilla has been their coach and “Russian mother” ever since.
Anna competed as a level 4 gymnast in 2006. She finished third in the all-around at the Capital City Classic. She moved up to level 5 in the fall and placed third in the all-around at the Level 5 State Championships. In 2007, Anna finished third in the all-around at the Level 6 State Championships.
During the 2008-2009 season, Anna moved up to level 7. She placed second in the all-around and first on uneven bars at the Get Your Feet Wet. At the Flip Fest Invitational, she placed first on floor exercise and third on uneven bars. At the Hilton Head Island Invitational, she finished first on uneven bars, balance beam, floor exercise and in the all-around. Anna earned gold medals on balance beam, floor exercise and in the all-around at the WOGA Classic. At the Charleston Cup, Anna finished sixth in the all-around and second on floor exercise. She won four silver medals on uneven bars, balance beam, floor exercise and in the all-around at the National Gymnastics Challenge. At the Level 7 State Championships, Anna finished second on uneven bars, fourth on floor exercise and eighth overall.
Anna began her 2008-2009 season as a level 8 gymnast at the Twin City Classic where she placed first on vault and second on uneven bars, floor and in the all-around. She finished first on uneven bars, balance beam and in the all-around at the Tampa Bay Turners Invitational. At the IGI Chicago Style, she earned gold medals on uneven bars, balance beam and in the all-around. She finished second in the all-around at the Sweetheart Invitational and third in the all-around at the Charleston Cup. At the Level 8 State Championships, she won a gold medal on vault and two silver medals on uneven bars and in the all-around. She concluded her 2010 season at the Level 8 Regionals where she finished third in the all-around as well as first on uneven bars and balance beam and third on floor exercise. Anna was a Level 8 NC State Team Member.
In 2011, Anna began competing as a level 9 gymnast. She won the all-around title at the Twin City Classic. At the Tampa Bay Turners Invitational, she finished second in the all-around and first on uneven bars and floor exercise. She earned gold medals on vault, uneven bars, floor exercise and in the all-around at the Metroplex Challenge. Anna placed second overall at the Sweetheart Invitational. She then finished first in the all-around at the Charleston Cup and National Gymnastics Challenge. At the Level 9 State Championships, she placed third in the all-around, second on uneven bars and third on floor exercise. She won gold medals on vault and uneven bars as well as a silver medal in the all-around at the Level 9 Regionals. This qualified Anna to the Level 9 Eastern Nationals where she earned five total medals; a gold medal on floor exercise, silver medals on vault, balance beam and in the all-around and a bronze medal on uneven bars. Anna was named to the Region 8 All-Star Team.
As a first-year level 10 gymnast, Anna started the season at the Get Your Feet Wet, finishing first on vault, balance beam and in the all-around. She won the uneven bars title at the Gala and Sand Dollar Invitational. At the Sweetheart Invitational, she placed first on uneven bars and in the all-around. Anna traveled to Dallas, Texas for the Metroplex Challenge where she placed fourth in the all-around and third on balance beam. At the Charleston Cup, she placed first on uneven bars, balance beam, floor exercise and in the all-around. Anna earned gold medals on vault and balance beam at the National Gymnastics Challenge. At the Level 10 State Championships, she placed fourth in the all-around and first on uneven bars. She did really well at the Region 8 Championships, placing first in the all-around as well as second on vault, uneven bars and balance beam. This qualified Anna to the Junior Olympic Nationals in Hampton, VA, finishing fourth on vault, first on uneven bars and second on balance beam. She also helped the Region 8 to win the Junior A team title.
Anna trains about 24 hours per week at Southeastern Gymnastics in Weddington, NC under coaches Ludmilla Shobe and Galina Meliakina. Currently, Anna is preparing for the upcoming 2013 season as a second-year level 10 gymnast.
