Areya started taking gymnastics classes in 2014 when she was 12 years old. Areya’s aunt was a gymnast and competed four years at Southeast Missouri State University (SEMO) on a full-ride scholarship. Areya started taking gymnastics at Upstate Gymnastics in Pendleton, SC with the same coach that coached her aunt. Areya started as a level 5 gymnast and immediately excelled. She was asked to be on the competition team and her first meet scored an all-around of 36.350. She moved up to level 6 and competed that level one season. She scored out of level 7 and moved to level 8 in 2015-2016 season. She placed third in the all-around and first on uneven bars and balance beam at the Level 8 State Championships. She qualified to the Region 8 Championships where she placed fourth in the all-around with a 37.250, second on uneven bars and third on vault.
During the 2016-2017 season, Areya moved up to level 9 where she finished first in the all-around and second on vault and uneven bars, qualifying to the Region 8 Championships. Areya competed as a first-year level 10 gymnast in 2018 where she placed third in the all-around and first on uneven bars at the State Championships. She qualified to the Region 8 Championships.
