Athena Martinez was born on December 5, 2001 in Mesa, AZ to Justine and Abraham Martinez. She has an older brother, Dylan and a family dog, Frank. Athena is an honor student at Vista Ridge High School and will graduate in 2019. During her spare time, she enjoys the outdoors and spending time with her friends and family watching baseball, swimming, camping, and running. Athena is very active in her community volunteering her time at the TX Humane Heroes animal rescue.
At an early age Athena attended ballet and modern dance classes. In third grade, a friend from school invited Athena to open gym at Gold Medal Gymnastics, she couldn’t get enough and in 2010 began attending rec. classes. Shortly after her family moved to Austin, TX where she started at Capital Gymnastics, joining their show team in 2011. Athena had truly found her passion and as a result of hard work and dedication she quickly advanced, skipping several compulsory levels and becoming an optional gymnast in 2014.
As a level 7 gymnast in 2014, Athena finished in the top ten in the all-around with a 37.450, fourth on balance beam and eighth on vault. At the Region 3 Championships, she placed second in the all-around with a 38.075, second on vault and uneven bars and third on balance beam. Athena moved up to level 8 for the 2015 season. She placed eighth in the all-around with a 37.550, third on uneven bars and seventh on vault. She qualified to the Region 3 Championships where she placed fourth on vault, eighth on floor exercise and 23rd overall with a 37.150.
In 2016, Athena moved up to level 9. She placed seventh on vault with a 9.425 and ninth on floor exercise scoring a 9.375 at the State Championships. At the Region 3 Championships, she placed sixth on vault with a 9.525. In 2017, Athena finished fourth in the all-around and first on vault at the State Championships. At the Region 3 Championships, she placed first in the all-around, first on balance beam and second on vault. Athena qualified to the Level 9 Western Nationals in Boise, ID where she placed fourth in the all-around, fifth on uneven bars and balance beam and seventh on vault. Athena was in America's Top 100 on vault with a 9.750 in level 9.
Athena trains 21-29 hours per week at Capital Gymnastics in Cedar Park, TX under coaches Barry Hyder and Pam Hyder. She is working hard to become a successful level 10 gymnast as well as to obtain a college gymnastics scholarship.
