Deanne Marie Soza was born on September 24, 2001 in Orem, UT to Alberto and Maria Soza. She has a younger brother, Carlos and two dogs named Tuffy and Rosie.
Deanne's parents decided to sign up Deanne for gymnastics as a summer activity when she was four years old at Arete Gymnastics in Lindon, UT and she never looked back. Two short years later, Deanne started competing level 4 when she was six years old. She was the 2007 Level 4 State Balance Beam Champion and 2009 Level 6 State All-Around, Vault, Uneven Bars and Floor Exercise Champion. In the fall of 2009, Deanne made the National TOPs Diamond Team.
In 2010, Deanne grabbed gold medals on uneven bars, balance beam, floor exercise and in the all-around at the Level 7 State Championships. In the fall, she made the National TOPs Team. Deanne moved up to level 8 for the 2011 season where she finished first on balance beam and third in the all-around. Deanne passed hopes elite compulsories at the US Open Championships in Florida. For the second time, she made the National TOPs Team in the fall of 2011.
Deanne skipped level 9 and started competing level 10 in 2012. She finished fifth in the all-around at the Level 10 State Championships and qualified to the Region 1 Championships. Deanne also qualified to hopes pre-elite and earned a trip to US Challenge in Chicago, IL. At this meet, Deanne grabbed gold medals on all four events and in the all-around.
After a successful showing at the US Challenge in Chicago, IL, Deanne was invited to attend Developmental Training Camps. She obtained her junior international elite score at the June Training Camp. In July, Deanne competed at the American Classic in Huntsville, TX, a qualifier to P&G Championships. At this meet, she placed sixth in the all-around and first on balance beam and her all-around score qualified her to the P&G Championships in Hartford, CT. A few weeks later, Deanne traveled to Chicago, IL for the Secret US Classic where she finished in the top 15. In August, Deanne competed at the P&G Championships in Hartford, CT.
In 2014, Deanne qualified to the P&G Championships for the second time from American Classic in Huntsville where she finished third overall. In July, she had a great competition at the Secret US Classic in Chicago, IL, finishing third in the all-around, third on vault and second on uneven bars. Two weeks later, Deanne competed at the P&G Championships in Pittsburg, PA. She placed 12th in the all-around, seventh on vault and sixth on balance beam out of 34 junior gymnasts.
Right after P&G Championships in August 2014, Deanne had a very serious and rare eye infection where she could not open her eyes. For a few weeks, the doctors were not sure if it was curable and there was a small chance that she would be blind. Finally, the doctors were able to diagnose her eye infection with a Microbial Keratitis, an acanthamoeba infection in both corneas and she also contracted a bacteria called Pseudomonas on the right eye. While Deanne was fighting this eye infection, she continued to work out at her home with her eyes closed! Deanne regained her vision slowly and returned to the gym in October 2014 and was able to do some limited training.
In 2015, Deanne finished second in the all-around and second on uneven bars at the American Classic. A few weeks later, she traveled to Chicago, IL for the Secret US Classic where she placed fifth in the all-around, second on balance beam and third on floor exercise. At the P&G Championships in Indianapolis, IN, she placed 13th overall.
In February 2016, Deanne was named to the USA team for the Gymnix International in Montréal, Canada. She helped the USA team to win the team gold medal ahead of second-place Russia and third-place Canada. Individually, Deanne earned a silver medal in the all-around with a 56.275. She also qualified to two event finals where she brought home two more medals; a silver medal on vault and a bronze medal on uneven bars. In June, Deanne competed at the Secret US Classic in Hartford, CT, finishing eighth in the all-around and fourth on vault. She competed at the P&G Championships in St. Louis, MO. Following her season, her family made a hard decision to move to Texas so Deanne could train at Texas Dreams Gymnastics in Coppell, TX.
