Joelle Dickens was born on June 24, 2002 to Steve and Theresa Dickens. She has a sister, Sarah. Currently, Joelle is a student at Cary High School in Cary, NC and she will graduate from high school in 2020.

Joelle could do a perfect roundoff when she was just two years old, so her mom decided to enroll her into gymnastics for fun in 2005. She started her competitive gymnastics career at Impact Athletics Gymnastics in Cary, NC.

When she was at Impact, she finished second in the all-around with a 37.525, first on balance beam and second on vault and floor exercise at the 2009 Level 4 State Championships. Following her level 4 season, she moved to Team Attraction Gymnastics (TAG) in Apex, NC. As a level 5 gymnast in 2010, Joelle placed sixth in the all-around with a 36.000, fourth on vault and fifth on uneven bars at the State Championships. She finished second in the all-around and second on vault and floor exercise at the 2011 Level 6 NC Judges Cup.

Joelle quickly moved up to level 7 for the 2012 season. She finished first on uneven bars, balance beam, floor exercise and in the all-around at the NC National Judges Cup. She had a great meet at the State Championships where she placed eighth in the all-around with a 37.750, fifth on uneven bars and sixth on balance beam. She qualified to the Level 7 Regionals. Joelle continued competing level 7 in 2013 where she placed in the top 15 in the all-around.

As a level 8 gymnast in 2014, Joelle placed in the top ten on uneven bars, balance beam and floor exercise at the State Championships. She moved up to level 9 for the 2015 season where she placed in the top ten on balance beam at the State Championships. In 2016, Joelle finished second in the all-around and second on uneven bars at the State Championships, qualifying to Regionals. In 2017, Joelle finished third on balance beam at the State Championships. At the Region 8 Championships, she placed fourth in the all-around with a 37.300, second on balance beam and third on uneven bars. Joelle qualified to the Level 9 Eastern Nationals in Lansing, MI where she placed in the top ten.

Joelle trains 20 hours per week at Team Attraction Gymnastics (TAG) in Apex, NC under coaches Monica Ward, Lauren Elliott and Todd Shahan. Joelle is working hard to qualify to the Junior Olympic Nationals as well as to obtain a college gymnastics scholarship.
