Gym Goals JO Nationals & College Gymnastics

My name is Josie Dietrich and I am currently a Sophomore, Level 10 at Fuzion Gymnastics in Kearney, MO. I look forward to continuing my journey through my high school years as a high achieving student, competitive gymnast and a supportive teammate. Upon graduation in 2024, my long-term goals are to earn athletic and academic scholarships as a college gymnast with a school that is a good fit for my education and career dreams.

Even though my mom was a college basketball player and my dad a college long and triple jumper, they recognized that I spent most of my time upside down and signed me up for parent tot classes at our local YMCA when I was three years old. I fell in love with gymnastics! I practiced at the YMCA through level 3, trained at Russell Gymnastics in Stevens Point, WI with Coach Dave and Debbie Russell from levels 4-10, and then transitioned to Fuzion Gymnastics where I currently train.

Some gymnastics achievements for me have been being a State Champion at level 3 (Beam, Floor), level 5 (Vault, Floor), level 7 (Vault, Floor), level 8 Region 4 All-Around Champion (Bronze in Bars, Beam) and level 7, 8 & 9 Regional Qualifier. A highlight in 2020 as a level 9 gymnast was competing in the Event Finals on uneven bars at the Northern Lights Classic and scoring a 9.500! In 2021, I placed 1st on Bars at every meet except for one. I was State Champion in Bars (9.6), 2nd Floor and AA and 4th on Beam. It was extra exciting that our level 9 team placed 3rd in State! This season as a level 10, I completed Bars and Vault due to healing an injury that kept me from competing All Around. A few highlights were 2nd in the State in Bars, competing in Event Finals at Northern Lights Classic, qualifying for regionals in Bars and Vault.

“Josie Dietrich had been a gymnast at Russell Gymnastics for 9 years. She came to us as a level 4 and competed 1 year at each level (except for 6), 3 years at level 9 and 1 year at level 10. Josie has the beauty of Nastia Liukin. Her form and flexibility stand out as well as her confidence in performing. She is calm and steady at practice as well as meets. We are proud of her work ethic and dedication in this sport. Josie is super easy to coach and thrives on paying attention to detail. She inspires others and always has a positive attitude. Josie is a leader at the gym in every area of training.

Our final meet in the 2020 season was Northern Lights in Minnesota with 7 USA states and Canada in competition. Josie made it to Event Finals competing with the top 8 - Level 9 gymnasts of all ages on uneven bars. Josie placed 5th with a score of 9.5. Josie’s routines on beam and floor suit her well. They are choregraphed to place attention on her extreme flexibility. She is beautiful to watch! Josie has a very bright future in this sport and will go onto be a great asset to any D1 college gymnastic program. We are thankful to have the opportunity to train Josie and we are excited for her future years in our program and beyond.” - Dave and Debbie Russell, Coaches and Owners at Russell Gymnastics

Through my education in my early years as a homeschool and virtual student and now through Christa McAuliffe Academy of Arts and Sciences online private school, I have been able to focus on my passions. I have learned how to work independently and to manage my time and responsibilities successfully.

I love tracking down the nearest smoothie bowl restaurant, and avocado toast is one of my favorites! Having fun photo shoots with my friends on the weekends is something I really enjoy. In my free time, I create artwork in my bullet journal and pride myself in being organized (decluttering and organizing are super fun). Other activities that I spend time doing are boating in the summer and cross-country skiing in the winter. I love nature and traveling to new places (many of them to support my younger brothers at their martial arts tournaments). My artwork was chosen to be displayed at the Central WI Cultural Center and I earned second place finish with photography in the Schmeeckle Reserve Arts Contest. Over the years, I have been involved in a learning co-op with local artists, community leaders and service projects. I was also a longtime voice and piano student at UWSP Aber Suzuki Center where I participated in performances and recitals. I continue to learn and play piano.

“I have had the pleasure of teaching voice to Josie since she was three years old. Josie is a very determined young woman with a beautiful personality. She is always willing to work hard and to pursue a high level of ability in her music as well as her sports. It is fun to see how Josie can take the challenging work from one discipline and apply it to another. I believe she will be not only a positive addition to any school and team because of her skills in music and gymnastics but also because she is imaginative, mature for her age and has a very kind nature.”  - Mary Hofer, Suzuki Specialist/SAA Teacher Trainer, Aber Suzuki Center Program Coordinator

I am lucky to have a supportive family. My dad, John, is a chiropractor who keeps my body healthy and my mom, Jackie, is a life coach, mental toughness trainer and wellness speaker. Some of my biggest fans are my two younger brothers, Trey and Jackson, and my Grandma Etta who comes to just about every meet to cheer me on. I am also very grateful for my coaches, teachers, teammates and friends!

“I am so proud of Josie and her commitment to gymnastics and everything else she does. She and her teammates amaze me! Josie is well rounded, fun to talk with and a joy to watch grow up into a wonderful young person.” - Josie’s Grandma Etta and Biggest Fan
