Katherine Shek was born on March 14, 2001 in Boston, MA to Tom and Carol Shek. She has a brother, Christopher. Currently, Katherine is a junior at Winnacunnet High School and she will graduate from high school in 2019. During her spare time, she enjoys dance, arts, piano and flute.
Katherine started in recreational classes and summer camp when she was four years old. A coach asked her to join the team at age five. Between swim team and gymnastics, Katherine decided to give gymnastics a try at age six and felt in love with the sport. She started her competitive gymnastics career at Gymnastics at Brentwood Commons in Brentwood, NH where she trained under coach Sarah Tremblay. Katherine moved to New Hampshire Academy of Gymnastics prior to her level 6 season.
Katherine had a successful level 6 season in 2012 where she placed first in the all-around and first on uneven bars and floor exercise at the Sectionals. She skipped level 7 and quickly moved up to level 8 for the 2013 season. At the State Championships, Katherine placed fourth in the all-around and second on uneven bars. She qualified to the Region 6 Championships where she placed sixth on balance beam.
In December 2013, Katherine broke her growth plate on her wrist and was unable to compete in 2014. During the 2014-2015 season, she tested out of level 9 at the Holiday Invitational where she placed fifth in the all-around and fourth on vault. She moved up to level 10 for the rest of the season. She placed fourth in the all-around and second on balance beam at the Hot Cocoa Classic. At the State Championships, Katherine placed third on balance beam, fourth on vault and floor exercise and fifth in the all-around. Katherine missed 2016 season due to an injury. Following her 2016 season, she moved back to Gymnastics at Brentwood Commons. In 2017, Katherine placed third on vault at the State Championships. At the Region 6 Championships, she finished fourth in the all-around and third on uneven bars. She qualified to the Junior Olympic Nationals in Indianapolis, IN.
Currently, Katherine is preparing for the 2018 season as a level 10 gymnast. She trains 20-25 hours per week at Gymnastics at Brentwood Commons (GBC) in Brentwood, NH under coaches Brandon Hutchinson and Kristin Paradis. Katherine is working hard to become a successful level 10 gymnast as well as to compete for a college gymnastics team.
