When Makenzie was four years old, her parents wanted to find a sport that capitalized on her strength and flexibility. They enrolled her in a YMCA gymnastics class during the summer. After a few days, the coach suggested she find a “real” gym for training as she was way ahead of the others her age. San Diego All-Stars Gymnastics became her home away from home for the next six years until she moved to Parker, Texas in August 2004. Since then, Makenzie has been training under coaches Helen Verucchi and Anatoli Toropov at Elite Champion Gymnastics.
In 2002, Makenzie competed level five. She finished fourth in the all-around at the Southern California State Championships. She moved up to level six for the 2003 season. Makenzie finished fifth in the all-around at the Sectional meet, qualifying for the Level 6 State Championships. She competed a few meets in the Spring of 2004 as a level six in California. When she moved to Texas in August, she started training level seven. Makenzie won the balance beam title at the 2005 North State Championships. At the Texas State Championships, she finished fourth on vault and uneven bars.
Makenzie competed level eight in 2006. She finished third in the all-around at the Go For It Classic in Las Vegas. At the Level 8 State Championships, she finished fourth in the all-around and third on balance beam. Makenzie ended her season with a top ten performance at the Level 8 Regional Championships.
In 2007, she competed her first year of level nine. She placed in the top ten at the Level 9 State Championships and Level 9 Regional Championships. She won bronze medals on balance beam at both meets. At the Level 9 Western National Championships, she finished fifth in the all-around and third on balance beam. After suffering a knee injury during her first level 10 meet in 2008, Makenzie competed level nine again. She won the vault title at the AOGC Invitational, and placed second on all-around, vault, and floor exercise at the Houston National Invitational. Makenzie finished fifth all-around at the Region III Championships. At the Level 9 Western National Championships, she finished 15th all-around, and in the top ten on beam and floor.
In 2009, Makenzie made the move to level ten. She won uneven bars and floor exercise and placed second all-around at the Texas Prime Meet. She again placed second in the all-around at the Metroplex Challenge, and third on every event. Makenzie won the floor exercise title at the Rose City Classic. At the Level 10 State Championships, she finished third on vault and sixth all-around. Makenzie again placed third on vault at the Level 10 Regional Championships. She placed eighth in the all-around, qualifying for the JO National Invitational Tournament where she won the all-around and vault titles!
She continued competing level ten in 2010. She finished second all-around at the Winter Cup Challenge. At the Texas Prime Meet and Metroplex Challenge, she placed third in the all-around. During a state qualifier she earned first place on vault, floor and all-around. She placed second in the all-around at both the WOGA Classic and Nadia Comaneci Invitational. She was chosen by Nadia Comaneci to receive a Spirit Award for her performance. At the Level 10 State Championships, she placed fifth in the all-around with a 37.375. Makenzie finished tenth all-around at the Level 10 Regional Championships. She ended her 2010 season at the Junior Olympic National Invitational Tournament, where she finished second on vault.
In 2011, Makenzie placed eighth in the all-around at the Tiger Classic and tenth in the all-around at the Metroplex Challenge. Makenzie won the all-around title as well as first on floor exercise and second on vault at the Houston National Invitational. At the Rose City Classic, she placed second in the all-around as well as second on vault, uneven bars and floor exercise. Makenzie placed impressive fifth in the all-around at the Level 10 Texas State Championships. There, she qualified to the Level 10 Regionals, where she won a silver medal on vault. She was invited to compete at the Junior Olympic National Invitational Tournament in Long Beach, California and she placed second in the all-around, third on vault and fourth on uneven bars.
Makenzie started her 2012 season at the Tiger Classic, finishing fourth in the all-around and first on balance beam. At the Friends of Achievers, she earned gold medals on balance beam, floor exercise and in the all-around. Makenzie finished second on uneven bars and balance beam at the Space City Classic. At the Texas Prime Meet, Makenzie placed first on vault and in the all-around, qualifying to the Legendz Classic on the next day. At the Houston National Invitational, she finished third on vault, floor exercise and in the all-around. She finished fifth in the all-around, first on vault and second on floor exercise at the Level 10 State Championships. At the Region 3 Championships, she finished seventh in the all-around and fourth on vault. This qualified Makenzie to the Junior Olympic Nationals in Hampton, VA where she finished 18th in the all-around, 11th on vault and 13th on balance beam.
Makenzie Rachel Johnson was born on February 24, 1994 in Yokohama, Japan to Lorne and Alyson Johnson. She has three brothers - Taylor, Riley, and Kade. Currently, Makenzie is a senior, class of 2012, at Allen High School.
