At the age of three, Melissa joined her older sister, Sheridan, at Desert Devils Gymnastics. In 2003, Melissa competed as a level four gymnast. She finished 15th in the all-around at the Desert Devils Classic. She also placed in the top 15 at the Sweetheart Invitational and Shamrock Invitational. She moved up to level five for the fall season. She won balance beam, floor exercise and the all-around title at the PGA Halloween Invitational. At the Level 5 State Championships, Melissa finished first on floor exercise and third on vault.
By 2006, Melissa was competing as a level ten gymnast. She finished fourth on uneven bars at the Flips USA Invitational. She placed in the top 20 at the Hard Rock Invitational. At the Level 10 State Championships, Melissa won the vault title and finished third in the all-around. Her next meet was the Level 10 Regionals, where she finished seventh overall. She claimed the last spot to the Junior Olympic Nationals. Melissa had a great meet at the Junior Olympic Nationals, where she finished in the top twenty all-around.
Melissa continued competing as a level ten gymnast in 2007. She competed on two events at the beginning on the season. She won a silver medal on balance beam at the Fiesta Bowl Invitational. At the Level 10 State Championships, Melissa won the balance beam title and finished fifth in the all-around. At the Level 10 Regionals, Melissa placed seventh in the all-around. There, she qualified to the Junior Olympic Nationals for the second time. At the JO Nationals, Melissa really shined, where she finished second on uneven bars. In the all-around, she was fourth and qualified to the Junior Olympic National Team!
In 2008, Melissa finished second in the all-around and first on balance beam at the Crystal Cup. At the Fiesta Bowl Invitational, Melissa won a silver medal in the all-around and a gold medal on balance beam. In February, she qualified to junior international elite from the US National Training Center in Texas. Melissa then won the vault title at the Pikes Peak Cup. Melissa finished third in the all-around at the Golden State Classic. She then won uneven bars, balance beam, floor exercise and the all-around title at the Level 10 State Championships! Melissa returned to elite after the Level 10 States. She qualified to her first VISA Championships from the Texas Dreams Elite Qualifier after placing eighth in the all-around. At the VISA Championships in Boston, MA, Melissa finished 20th in the all-around and tied for ninth on uneven bars.
In 2009, Melissa was unable to compete on all events due to an injury. Melissa finished second on floor exercise at the Lady Luck Invitational and Fiesta Bowl. At the Great West Gymfest, Melissa won a silver medal on balance beam and a bronze medal on floor exercise. Melissa concluded her 2009 season at the Level 10 State Championships, where she finished third on balance beam and first on floor exercise.
Melissa started her 2010 season at the Lady Luck Invitational in Las Vegas, Nevada. There, she won gold medals on uneven bars and balance beam. At the Fiesta Bowl Invitational, she placed second on vault and first on balance beam. Melissa then won gold medals on vault and balance beam at the Classic Rock Invitational. At the Long Beach Open, she placed second on vault and first on uneve nbars and balance beam. She concluded her 2010 season at the Malibu Coast Challenge as an elite gymnast, where she won gold medals on vault and uneven bars and a silver medal on balance beam.
Currently, Melissa trains 30 to 35 hours per a week at Desert Devils Gymnastics under coaches Kristin fanning and Wes Jones. She is preparing for upcoming 2011 season as a level 10 gymnast. Melissa's long-term goal is to receive a full ride scholarship to a Division I school.
Melissa Jean Metcalf was born on February 22, 1996 to Mern and Laurie in Mesa, Arizona. She has an older sister, Sheridan and three dogs, Sporty, Tubby and Little Red. Currently, Melissa is a freshman (2010-2011) at Arizona Virtual Academy.
