Nyah Kennedy Smith was born on June 2, 2001 in Michigan to Carl and Antoinette Smith. She has a younger sister, Nikki who is also a gymnast at Oakland Gymnastics. Currently, Nyah is a senior at North Farmington High School and she will graduate in 2019.

Nyah's parents enrolled her into Mommy and Me classes when she was two years old. She started her gymnastics career at Oakland Gymnastics Training Center and has been there ever since. Nyah started competing level 4 in 2010 where she finished sixth in the all-around and third on uneven bars at the State Championships. As a level 5 gymnast in 2011, Nyah placed in the 15in the all-around and fourth on vault at the State Championships.

Nyah tested out of level 6 and moved up to level 7 in 2012 where she finished fourth in the all-around with a 37.575 and first on floor exercise at the State Championships. As a level 8 gymnast in 2013, Nyah finished eighth in the all-around at the State Championships. She qualified to the Region 5 Championships, finishing fifth in the all-around with a 37.600 and seventh on balance beam and floor exercise.

In 2014, Nyah competed level 9 where she placed fifth in the all-around and fourth on vault at the State Championships. At the Region 5 Championships, she finished sixth on vault. Nyah repeated level 9 in 2015. At the State Championships, she finished third in the all-around, third on balance beam and fourth on floor exercise. Nyah did really well at the Region 5 Championships where she placed fourth in the all-around with a 37.250, third on floor exercise and fourth on vault. She qualified to the Level 9 Eastern Nationals in Kissimmee, FL, finishing third in the all-around with a 37.300, fourth on vault and seventh on floor exercise.

As a first-year level 10 gymnast in 2016, Nyah finished eighth in the all-around at the State Championships. She qualified to the Region 5 Championships. In 2017, Nyah finished ninth in the all-around and fifth on balance beam with a 9.500 at the Region 5 Championships. She qualified to the Junior Olympic Nationals in Indianapolis, IN. In 2018, Nyah placed fifth in the all-around with a 37.625 and fourth on balance beam with a 9.525 at the State Championships. At the Region 5 Championships, she finished eighth on vault with a 9.525.

Nyah trains 22 hours per week at Oakland Gymnastics Training Center in Michigan under coaches Ruth Miller, Mel Foster, Renee Henry and Jessica Henry. Nyah's long-term goal is to obtain a Division I college gymnastics scholarship.
