Rachel Kathryn Gowey was born on October 3, 1997 to Jerry and Rhonda Gowey in Des Moines, Iowa. She has two sisters, Taylor and Emma, a dog named Max and a cat named Thomas. Currently, Rachel is a sophomore at Johnston Middle School. She enjoys playing the piano, watching movies and reading during her spare time.

Rachel's oldest sister, Taylor, was a gymnast and her mom works at the gym, so Rachel always has been in the gym and around the sport since she was very young. She started taking recreational classes at the age of four and eventually started her competitive gymnastics career at Chow's Gymnastics.

In 2009, Rachel was Level 7 State All-Around Champion. She also grabbed gold medals on uneven bars, balance beam and floor exercise in the same meet. A few months later, she moved up to level 8 for the 2010 season. She won the all-around title at the Rising Stars Challenge and Daytona Beach Open.

As a level 9 gymnast in 2011, she placed second in the all-around as well as first on vault and floor exercise at the Northern Lights Classic. At the Level 9 State Championships, she placed first on vault, balance beam and in the all-around. She had a great meet at the Level 9 Regionals, finishing first in the all-around with a 38.175. This qualified Rachel to the Western Nationals. At the Nationals, she placed impressive second on balance beam and in the all-around.

Rachel moved up to level 10 in 2012. She grabbed gold medals on vault, uneven bars, floor exercise and in the all-around at the Winter Classic. At the IGI Chicago Style, she finished fourth in the all-around and first on floor exercise. Rachel then placed first in the all-around at the Vacation Classic and Northern Lights Classic. At the Level 9 State Championships, she swept the gold medals, including the all-around title with a 38.075. Rachel qualified to the Junior Olympic Nationals after finishing first on balance beam, floor exercise and in the all-around at the Level 10 Regionals. At the JO Nationals in Hampton, VA, she brought home a silver medal in the all-around and a gold medal on balance beam. She made the JO National Team.

Currently, Rachel is preparing for the upcoming 2013 season where she hopes to qualify to senior international elite as well as to the VISA Championships in Hartford, CT. She trains 29 hours per week at Chow's Gymnastics in West Des Moines, Iowa under coaches Liang Chow and Liwen Zhuang.
