Tessa Phillips was born on April 14, 1999 in Wellington, Ohio. She has a younger brother, Parker and a younger sister, Logan. Currently, Tessa is an honor student at Brecksville-Broadview Heights High School and she will graduate in 2017. She earned the Presidential Academic Award of Excellence and Head of the School Awards in 7th grade and 8th grade. Tessa’s favorite classes are math and life science. Her goal is to attend a college or university with a highly rated academic program that also has a top Division I gymnastics program in order to pursue both her dreams of contributing to a NCAA championship gymnastic team and a career in the medical field.

At the age of five, Tessa attended a birthday party at the Little Gym and loved it so much that she begged her mom to let her start gymnastics. She started her competitive gymnastics career at Gymnastics World in Broadview Heights, OH.

As a level 5 gymnast in 2007, Tessa won the the all-around, vault and floor exercise titles at the State Championships. In the fall of 2007, she made the National TOPs Diamond Team. In 2008, Tessa competed only once as a level 6 gymnast at the Rock 'n Roll Classic where she finished first on uneven bars, balance beam, floor exercise and in the all-around. During the spring of 2008, Tessa competed in several dance competitions. She placed second at the V.I.P. Nationals in the Broadway Mini Division with an acro/jazz solo to the music “I’m a Big Girl Now” from the musical Hairspray. That fall, she made the National TOPs "B" Team.

Tessa moved up to level 7 for the 2009 season. At the State Championships, she grabbed gold medals on uneven bars, balance beam, floor exercise and in the all-around. She made her second National TOPs "B" Team. As a level 8 gymnast in 2010, Tessa finished seventh in the all-around and first on floor exercise at the State Championships. She qualified to the Region 5 Championships where she placed eighth on uneven bars and floor exercise. She made the National TOPs "B" Team in the fall.

In 2011, Tessa moved up to level 9. She had a great meet at the State Championships where she placed first on vault, uneven bars, floor exercise and in the all-around. At the Region 5 Championships, she finished fifth in the all-around and first on floor exercise. She qualified to the Level 9 Eastern Nationals where she placed tenth in the all-around, ninth on uneven bars and first on floor exercise. In June, Tessa competed HOPES pre-elite at the Disney National Elite Qualifier placing tenth all-around with a score of 47.2, just missing qualifying for the US Covergirl Challenge.

In late October 2011, Tessa competed in the Rushmoor Rose Bowl Invitational in London, England as part of a five member team from Buckeye Gymnastics that won the bronze team medal. Unfortunately at the meet, Tessa fractured her elbow. Due to the injury, Tessa began her 2012 Level 10 season late. She competed only on floor exercise at the Buckeye Classic, finishing fourth. She placed in the top ten at the Level 10 Ohio State and top twenty at the Region 5 Championships. In May 2012, Tessa earned her compulsory elite score.

Tessa missed most of the 2013 season due to breaking her ankle three days before the first meet. In late February, she competed all four events at the Buckeye Classic with limited routines, scoring a 35.750 including a 9.450 on uneven bars and 9.275 on floor exercise. After that meet, the decision was made to sideline Tessa for the rest of the season to allow her ankle to properly and fully heal. As a result, Tessa did not compete during the championship season. In 2014, Tessa was badly injured competing at the Buckeye Classic where she dislocated both elbows and tore several ligaments and tendons.

No one thought that Tessa would do gymnastics again. However, nothing short of a miracle, she started competing by January 2015! At the State Championships, she finished fifth in the all-around and first on balance beam. She had a great meet at the Region 5 Championships where she placed eighth in the all-around and sixth on floor exercise. Tessa qualified to the Junior Olympic Nationals in Des Moines, IA.

In 2016, Tessa finished eighth in the all-around and second on floor exercise with a 9.500 at the Region 5 Championships. She qualified to the Junior Olympic Nationals in Ft. Worth, TX where she placed 15th in the all-around with a 37.350 and seventh on floor exercise with a 9.500 out of 56 gymnasts.

Currently, Tessa is preparing for the 2017 season as a level 10 gymnast. She trains 28 hours per week at Gymnastics World in Broadview Heights, OH training under coaches Doug Miller, Caroline Nunn, Jared Nunn, Joan Ganim and Bob Wood. Tessa is working hard to become a successful level 10 gymnast as well as to compete for a Division I college gymnastics team.
