Nov 30 More Than A Hobby: Isabelle Schaefer

Cannon is notorious for its reputation in academics, the fine arts, and athletics. There are numerous opportunities to see students’ names in a game summary or be inducted into the National Art Honors Society or the Cum Laude society, but the Cannon Upper School community rarely talks about the accomplishments of students outside of school. This series is going to put the spotlight on students’ extracurricular achievements that otherwise go unnoticed.

Isabelle Schaefer ‘21 has been a gymnast at the Everest Gymnastics Training Center for most of her life. “13 years,” she stated with confidence. “My mom wanted to put me in daycare, and she found the gym I train at, and put me in [their] daycare, and put me in classes, and it all went from there.” She has earned 9th place in the nation this past season and has been verbally committed to UNC Chapel Hill since her freshman year. “It’s taught me that if you commit to something, you can get so much out of it.”

She has been able to apply important values learned from gymnastics to being a student at Cannon. “You have to be very disciplined. So it helps me when I have my drops I go to the library and do my homework so that I don’t have to stay up to midnight doing it ‘cause I get home at 8:30. I’m just being very disciplined in my work.” Isabelle has set a good example for gymnasts younger than her, and many beginners watch with bewilderment as she soars from one uneven bar to another. “Don’t give up, [no matter] how hard it gets. I almost quit at one point, it was so hard. But I’m glad I didn’t, because it was so worth it.” She sets a great example for kids that are hesitant to start a new hobby or to continue one for which their passion is wavering, and reminds us of the gratification that comes from hard work and dedication.

Today at the Junior Olympic Nationals in Cincinnati, OH, Isabelle placed ninth in the all-around with a 37.650 in the Junior C session! She also placed sixth on uneven bars and balance beam scoring a 9.550 and 9.525 respectively and 13th on vault with a 9.525. Congratulations Isabelle.

Isabelle did well at the Region 8 Championships in Bradenton, FL this weekend. She placed third in the all-around with a 37.650, first on uneven bars with a 9.650 and third on balance beam scoring a 9.475. Isabelle qualified to the Junior Olympic Nationals in Cincinnati, OH next month. Congratulations Isabelle!

March 17, 2018
Today at the Level 10 State Championships, Isabelle finished fifth in the all-around with a 37.500. She also placed third on uneven bars with a 9.500 and seventh on balance beam scoring a 9.450. She qualified to the Region 8 Championships in Bradenton, FL next month. Good job Isabelle.

Isabelle won the all-around title with a 37.900 at the Elevate the Stage this past weekend! She placed first on uneven bars and balance beam scoring a 9.575 and 9.525 respectively, third on vault with a 9.325 and third on floor exercise scoring a 9.475. Good job Isabelle!

Isabelle competed at the Greensboro Invitational in Greensboro, NC where she placed eighth in the all-around with a 37.000. She placed second on uneven bars with a 9.575 and fifth on vault scoring a 9.400. Good job Isabelle.

At the Metroplex Challenge in Ft. Worth, TX this past weekend, Isabelle finished second in the all-around with a 37.625 in her age group. Shea also placed first on uneven bars with a 9.800 and fourth on vault and floor exercise scoring a 9.275 and 9.250 respectively. Good job Isabelle.

Isabelle did really well at the Everest Classic yesterday where she placed second in the all-around with a 37.775! She also finished first on uneven bars with a 9.625, second on balance beam and floor exercise with a 9.525 and 9.275 respectively and third on vault scoring a 9.350. Good job Isabelle! At the Atlanta Crown Invitational in Atlanta, GA this weekend, Isabelle finished second on uneven bars and balance beam scoring a 9.450 and 9.475 respectively and fifth on floor exercise with a 9.300. Good job Isabelle. New videos have been posted.

Isabelle started her 2017-2018 season this past weekend at the Myrtle Beach Cup in South Carolina. She finished third in the all-around, first on balance beam with a 9.350 and third on uneven bars and floor exercise. Good job Isabelle.

Isabelle is excited to announce that she verbally committed to the University of North Carolina! She will join the gymnastics team during the 2021-2022 school year. Congratulations Isabelle!

Isabelle concluded her 2017 season today at the Junior Olympic Nationals in Indianapolis, IN. She had a great meet where she placed eighth in the all-around with a 37.575 out of 56 gymnasts in the Junior A session. She also placed second on uneven bars with a 9.600, 14th on balance beam scoring a 9.350 and 15th on floor exercise with a 9.300. Congratulations Isabelle! New videos have been posted.
