Nikki Karson Smith was born on May 24, 2004 in Michigan to Carl and Antoinette Smith. She has an older sister, Nyah who is also a gymnast at Oakland Gymnastics. Currently, Nikki is an honor student at Oakland Schools Virtual Learning Academy and she will graduate from high school in 2022. When Nikki has time outside of gymnastics, she enjoys drawing, traveling and hanging out with her friends.
Nikki's parents enrolled her into Mommy and Me classes when she was two years old. She started her gymnastics career at Oakland Gymnastics Training Center and has been there ever since. As a level 4 gymnast in 2011, Nikki finished third in the all-around and second on balance beam at the State Championships. Nikki competed level 5 in 2012-2014, qualifying to the State Championships every year.
In 2015, Nikki skipped level 6 and level 7 and immediately moved up to level 8. At the State Championships, she placed seventh in the all-around with a 37.250 and fourth on balance beam. She qualified to the Region 5 Championships where she placed 13th in the all-around with a 37.200, third on vault and fourth on uneven bars. Nikki tested out of level 9 in January 2016 and competed as a level 10 gymnast rest of the season. She competed in several national elite qualifiers testing for hopes pre-elite. Nikki qualified to the Region 5 Championships
As a first-year level 10 gymnast in 2017, Nikki qualified to the Region 5 Championships, finishing sixth on vault. In 2018, Nikki had a great season where she finished first in the all-around with a 37.950, first on balance beam and floor exercise and second on vault at the State Championships. At the Region 5 Championships, Nikki placed eighth in the all-around, first on vault and third on balance beam. She qualified to the Junior Olympic Nationals in Cincinnati, OH where she placed fourth on vault and sixth on floor exercise.
Nikki trains 32 hours per week at Oakland Gymnastics Training Center in Michigan under coaches Chris & Ruth Miller, Mel Foster, Renee Henry and Jessica Henry. Nikki would like to qualify to elite. Nikki's long-term goal is to obtain a Division I college gymnastics scholarship.
