Sage Hellbusch was born on November 16, 2010 in New York City to Jon and Michelle Hellbusch. She and her family, including sister Morgan and shih tzus Bonnie and Clyde, moved to Minnesota in 2013. Sage is an "A" student at Minnetonka High School and will graduate in 2028.
In 2016, at age six, Sage started taking gymnastics for fun, after being inspired, watching Simone Biles bring home the gold in the 2016 Summer Olympics. Sage and her sister would teach themselves gymnastics watching YouTube videos!
In the summer of 2018, Sage was asked to join the team in level 3. At the end of the summer, Sage quickly moved up to level 4, one week before the start of the season. In her first ever meet competing, Sage took first place on beam with a 9.750 and first place all-around with a score of 36.700. USAG awarded Sage Gymnast of the Month, just one month before her eighth birthday!
In 2019, as a level 6 gymnast, Sage placed first in the all-around in all six meets of the season, with an average of 37.000. Sage ended the season with a Legacy record of 38.700 all-around. Sage qualified for the 2020 Level 6 State Championships, which was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
In 2021, after several months of virtual training, Sage skipped level 7 and quickly moved up to level 8 for the 2021 season. As a first-year level 8, despite having a shortened season, Sage had one of her best seasons, consistently averaging 9.4s and 9.5s on all events and placed first on vault, second on uneven bars, third on floor exercise and second all-around at the 2021 Level 8 State Championships. Sage ended the season placing first on vault and third all-around at the 2021 Region 4 Championships
In 2022, as a first-year level 9, at age 11, Sage placed first on uneven bars and second on vault at 2022 Level 9 State Championships. Sage then went on to place third on vault at both the 2022 Region 4 Championships and the 2022 Level 9 Western Nationals.
In 2023, as a second-year level 9, Sage set several Legacy records and personal bests, placing first in all-around, all eight meets of the season, including winning States all-around, vault uneven bars & balance beam, Regional all-around, vault, uneven bars & floor exercise, Level 9 Western Nationals all-around & uneven bars. Sage made the Top 100 list in every event, with a 9.800 on vault, 9.750 on uneven bars, 9.825 on balance beam, 9.700 on floor exercise and 38.425 all-around. Sage was also honored to be invited to USAG 2023 Development National Team Camp in Texas, but could not attend due to scheduling conflicts.
Sage moved up to level 10 for the 2024 season and started out the year, placing 1st on balance beam at the Kim Zmeskal's Texas Prime Meet, to qualify to compete in the 2024 Legendz Classic hosted by Olympians Kim Zmeskal and Betty Okino. Sage was part of the Kara Eaker Beam Queens squad! Sage also won the Glider's Invitational all-around in California. Sage ended the year not only qualifying in compete all-around in the 2024 Level 10 Nationals in Daytona Beach, FL, but also placed tenth on balance beam and helped to secure the third place Team Award medal for the Region 4 Junior A group.
When Sage isn’t busy training over 20 hours each week at Twin City Twisters in Champlin, MN, she enjoys baking, making smoothies, swimming, playing tennis and family vacations, especially to Hawaii and Arizona. Sage’s long-term goals are to make the US National Team and to compete Division 1 college gymnastics.
