Sophia Nguyen was born on May 5, 2005 (5/5/5) to Son and Tracey Nguyen. She has two older brothers, Jack and Nick and one younger sister, Isabella (Who is also a gymnast at Legacy). Currently, Sophia is an honor student at Hopkins High School and she will graduate in 2023.
Sophia loved to flip as a toddler and her parents wanted her to have a safe place to burn off energy. Sophia has been training at Legacy Gymnastics in Minnesota since level 5 in 2015. She skipped level 6 and quickly moved up to level 7 for the 2016 season, finishing fourth on uneven bars at the State Championships. In 2017 as a level 8 gymnast, Sophia placed fourth in the all-around with a 37.325 and third on vault and balance beam at the State Championships. She qualified to the Region 4 Championships, finishing in the top ten in the all-around.
As a level 9 gymnast for the next two seasons, Sophia qualified to the Level 9 Western Nationals both years in 2018 and 2019. She placed third in the all-around with a 37.275 and second on vault at the 2018 Region 4 Championships and third in the all-around and second on floor exercise at the 2019 Region 4 Championships. Sophia was also the 2019 Level 9 MN State Vault Champion.
In 2021, Sophia placed fourth in the all-around and fifth on balance beam at the State Championships. She qualified to the Junior Olympic Nationals after finishing seventh in the all-around and fourth on vault at the Region 4 Championships. Sophia did well in 2022 where she placed fifth in the all-around with a 37.375 and fourth on balance beam at the State Championships. At the Region 4 Championships, she finished second in the all-around and second on vault and balance beam. Sophia qualified to the Level 10 National Championships in Mesa, AZ where she placed 23rd in the all-around with a 37.475 out of 56 gymnasts in a very tough group of competitors.
