Sydney Bennett was born on December 20, 2001 in Charlotte, NC to Scott and Kandy Bennett. She has a sister, Haley, two dogs named Petie and Emily and a cat, Tiffy. Currently, Sydney is a student at East Lincoln High School and she will graduate in 2020. During her spare time, she enjoys being outdoors, shopping and hanging out with her friends.
Sydney began her gymnastics career at Everest Gymnastics in Huntersville, NC in 2005 at age four and has been there ever since. As a level 5 gymnast in 2010, Sydney placed third in the all-around with a 37.375 and first on uneven bars and balance beam at the State Championships. In 2011, she finished first in the all-around with a 38.125 and first on vault and balance beam at the Level 6 State Championships.
As a level 7 gymnast in 2012, Sydney placed seventh in the all-around with a 37.775, fourth on floor exercise and fifth on uneven bars at the State Championships. She qualified to the Region 8 Championships where she finished ninth in the all-around, fourth on floor exercise and fifth on balance beam. Sydney had a great level 8 season in 2013 where she finished third in the all-around with a 37.850, third on uneven bars and fourth on vault at the State Championships. At the Region 8 Championships, she won the all-around title with a 37.700 and placed first on balance beam and third on uneven bars. Sydney continued competing level 8 in 2014 where she finished third in the all-around with a 38.125, third on floor exercise and fourth on uneven bars at the Region 8 Championships.
In 2015, Sydney moved up to level 9. She finished third in the all-around, first on balance beam and second on uneven bars at the State Championships. At the Region 8 Championships, she placed third in the all-around, fourth on balance beam and fifth on uneven bars. Sydney qualified to the Level 9 Eastern Nationals in Kissimmee, FL where she placed 13th in the all-around and ninth on uneven bars. As a second-year level 9 gymnast in 2016, Sydney finished first in the all-around, first on uneven bars, second on balance beam and third on vault at the State Championships. She had a great meet at the Region 8 Championships where she grabbed gold medals on uneven bars, balance beam, floor exercise and in the all-around with a 38.125. Sydney qualified to the Level 9 Eastern Nationals in Virginia Beach, VA, finishing first in the all-around, first on balance beam and floor exercise, fourth on vault and sixth on uneven bars. Sydney made the Region 8 All Star Team.
Sydney was unable to compete most of the 2017 season due to an injury. She bounced back for the 2018 season where she placed sixth in the all-around with a 37.475 and third on balance beam. She qualified to the Region 8 Championships, finishing seventh on balance beam.
Sydney trains 28-30 hours per week at Everest Gymnastics in Huntersville, NC under coaches Qi Han, Yiwen Chen and Nikolia Cherchen. She is working hard to become a successful level 10 gymnast and to qualify to the JO Nationals. Her long-term goal is to obtain a Division I college gymnastics scholarship.
